My First Piano Lesson
Sierra has been bugging me for months telling me that she wants to be one of my students. I've been skeptical about doing anything "formal" with her since she's so little, but the other day I came across a method book in my library which I had forgotten about. It's specifically geared towards pre-readers, and more importantly, has a CD that comes with it. Sierra's very favorite thing right now is book/CD combinations so I realized this might be just the ticket for her. Sure enough, she is completely obsessed with it. We've been working on the first unit together at the piano this week, which involves learning how to sit properly, and a couple of rhymes to help her get a nice hand position, as well as playing loud, soft, short, long, high and low notes (we had already done most of this before, but she likes to be able to look in the book and figure out what to do next by the pictures).
She'll sit at the piano for maybe 10 minutes going through the material that we've covered, and she's pretty close to being ready to move to the next section, but she's really into the CD. It has a full 48 tracks on it (most of them are pretty clever and catchy tunes/exercises), and she has listened to the entire thing every single day since I gave it to her, with the book in front of her, following along with every single page. She's going to have the whole thing memorized within a couple of weeks! Her favorite song so far is called "I made friends with a boa constrictor"
