The case of the empty crib.... solved!
Several weeks ago Jonathan heard Evi wake up in the morning and went in to get her up before she woke up Sierra, only to find.... an empty crib!!! After the prerequisite heart pounding, he looked around and saw her making her way down the stairs for breakfast (she always makes a beeline for the kitchen as soon as her feet hit the floor in the morning). He came in, made sure I was sitting down, and informed me that Evi had figured out how to climb out of her crib.
The next few days we proceeded accordingly--putting her to bed on the floor level bottom bunk (Sierra suddenly graduated to the chest high top bunk--thankfully she had asked to sleep there a couple of times, so it wasn't a huge deal for her to be shunted up there). At nighttime Evi did fine in the regular bed, but naptime was really pretty horrendous to try to get her to sleep. We were still trying to sort how how she had actually been able to get out of her crib without breaking an arm or something, since the top bar of the crib is at about shoulder height for her and it's not like she has any toe holds anywhere.
Several days later our babysitter Louise came to watch the girls and I was telling her that Evi had learned how to crawl out of the crib, so we needed to not put her to sleep there anymore, etc. She said, "Yeah, I know--Sierra already told me the other night when I was putting the girls to bed that Evi needed to sleep on the bottom bunk instead of her crib." What!?!?!? Evi had never been in the crib that night at all, and she never did climb out of it! AND, in all of our discussion about Evi figuring out how to crawl out of her crib, Sierra never once offered to us that she was never in there in the first place!! I still don't know if she was honestly oblivious to her role in all of it, or if she was holding out on us and just thinking the whole thing was hilarious. Could go either way.... The (sort of) funniest part of it was that the same night Sierra had gotten up to use the bathroom and afterwards I had gone back in and laid down with her for a minute--on the bottom bunk. I can attest to the fact that there was no 22 month old kid in the bed at that time. Since their bunk beds sit at an angle in the corner of the room, there's a little triangle "fort" in the corner and all I can figure out is that Evi was completely off the mattress and stuck back in that little corner for the whole night. Luckily the mattress sits right on the floor.
Needless to say, Evi is back once again in her crib--at least for awhile!
