Potato, patata

This morning Sierra was playing in her play kitchen and she had one of her play potatoes that she was "cooking". I was sitting on the futon feeding the baby and started absentmindedly singing "Potato, patata, tomato, tomahta...." Sierra quickly came over to me and looking at me very seriously she announced, "Mama, it's POTATO, not PATATA!!!" I guess if she ever meets anyone who says "patata" she's going to have to call the whole thing off.

A baseball fan is born

We took the whole family to a baseball game on Father's Day and Sierra was pretty enthralled by it--even though she was pretty sleepy, as the game coincided with her usual naptime. Jonathan explained a lot to her and she was very interested in watching what was going on. The next day I was asking her what she remembered about it. I was honestly expecting her first response to be that we had gotten crackerjacks and a pretzel, but in fact, the thing she said first was, "Wind up the pitcher!" and she was waving her arms around in a circle. I asked her what happens after the pitcher winds up and she said "He throws it!" She was a little foggy on the batting part, but after I reminded her of that and asked what happens next, she said, "ball go up, up, up in the air!" She has also been asking us to sing "Take me out to the ballgame" every two seconds and she knows a goodly number of the lyrics now. She sings the Pittsburgh version.... "and it's root, root, root for the Pirates...." ........and I guess that's how a new sports fan is born!!!

Sleeping with your eyes open

When I'm driving now, Evi's carseat is directly behind me so I can see Sierra on the other side if I turn around, but I can't see the baby. The other day in the car I was wondering if Evi was awake or asleep, so I asked Sierra if Baby Evi's eyes were open. Sierra responded emphatically, "Yes! Baby Evi is sleeping with her eyes open!"

Evi's first three weeks

Evi is three weeks old now and she has had quite a busy start to life. On her 5 day doctor's visit she was at 7 lbs. 2 oz, so she was back above birth weight already. She is a good eater and sleeper for the most part and seems to be growing overnight. She has already flipped over from back to tummy and from tummy to back, just from squirming around so much. I'm sure it wasn't intentional or anything at this point.... Her head is really strong already, too. Even when we were still in the hospital, she was lifting her head up for a few seconds at a time, and now she can hold it up for a decently long stretch. She keeps doing "practice smiles" in her sleep and so we are getting a little sneak preview on what her little smile will look like when she does it "for real." Not too long now!

Evi has already been to Sierra's storytime at the library 3 times, to the Children's Museum, to the Chihuly Exhibit at Phipps quite a few times, to the 3 Rivers Arts Festival, and to a baseball game on Father's Day (Pirates vs. WhiteSox---the Pirates won). We didn't do quite so much crazy stuff when Sierra was this small, but we are finding that with two kids sometimes it's easier and more fun to be out doing stuff rather than trying to manage things at home. At any rate, Evi is highly portable and seems to enjoy having lots of activity around--she does get overstimulated at some point and wants to be left alone in her crib, but for the most part she seems pretty social so far. We're having fun with her!
